Description

The Coleman PerfectFlow InstaStart 2-Burner Propane Stove makes campside cooking a breeze. Each burner delivers a fully-adjustable 10,000 BTUs with dependable, matchless InstaStart push-button ignition. The PerfectFlow propane pressure control ensures consistent cooking performance by producing a steady fuel stream -- even in cold weather, at high altitudes, or when fuel is low. What's more, the folding WindBlock system provides side panels to block the wind and foster more efficient cooking. The panels can alternately be folded down to form side shelves, which can be convenient condiment or utensil holders. With both burners on High, the stove provides about an hour of cooking time on one 16.4-oz propane cylinder (sold separately). The stove's rust-resistant enamel-painted case and removable nickel-chrome grate are a breeze to clean, and the secure latching lid and convenient carry handle make it easy to bring along.

Cook up a full meal without running out of cooking space with the Coleman EvenTemp InstaStart two-burner stove. Designed to accommodate a pair of pots or skillets at once, the stove offers two fully adjustable, 10,000 BTU burners, each equipped with Coleman's matchless InstaStart pushbutton ignition. The result is an easy-to-use stove that delivers an elite cooking performance time and again. Outdoor chefs will also appreciate the stove's PerfectFlow propane pressure control, which produces a steady fuel stream even in cold weather, high altitudes, or when fuel is low. The stove's PerfectHeat technology, meanwhile, employs recessed cook tops and lowered burner positions to generate efficient cooking heat. And thanks to the WindBlock side panels, the burners can stave off the elements while you cook. (The side panels also fold down to form side shelves for condiments or utensils.) So give yourself the gift of convenience and serious cooking power with this durable camping stove from Coleman. About Coleman The Coleman Company has been creating and innovating products for recreational outdoor use since W.C. Coleman started selling gasoline-powered lanterns in 1900. Inventor of the hugely popular fold-up camp stove, Coleman developed a plastic liner for his galvanized steel coolers in 1957--the birth of the modern cooler--and the company has been improving their utility and design ever since. The array of products that bear the Coleman name now includes just about everything you might need to work or play outdoors, from tents and sleeping bags to boats, backpacks, and furniture.

Coleman got it right this time!

by David Diamond from USA on 2008-08-08
Coleman got it right this time. The carrying handle is substantial and stays cool. The handle also facilitates pressing the lighter button without bracing against hot metal. The curved, sealed design eliminates sharp edges, and makes cleaning easier. Spacious burners allowed us to use our 9" fry pan on a single burner, with the side wind shields up, and still have room around it (we could have used a slightly larger fry pan).

Water boiled reasonably quickly.

The piezoelectric igniter worked well. Just keep clicking it until you either see the flame (hard to do in bright light) or hear the flame.

This is our first experience with propane. PROs: Hot and clean. Unlike gasoline stoves, the propane will not dirty the bottom of your pots and pans. And you don't have the smell and mess of gasoline stoves. CONs: Invisible flame in bright light. I cannot tell if the flame is overshooting or undershooting the bottom of the pot or pan. The flame can actually be too hot. Boil water with a full flame (I think that the right burner is a little hotter than the left). But fry pancakes on the lowest flame possible, and keep an eye on it. A higher flame can be so hot that it can discolor the metal, or reduce oil to a baked-on gum.

This stove made our recent camping trip a real pleasure.

This stove is perfect for campers. The burners are plenty hot and it is very easy to clean. Make sure you shop around, can be found MUCH cheaper in your local retail WalMart.

Wow, This Make Camping in the Rain A Pleasant Experience

by Pam Tee from on 2009-10-26
My husband and I were in the habit of just using an open fire to cook when we camped. But this weekend, since we were camping with our two youngsters ,for the first time, and their Scout friends, we decided to splurge and get this Coleman propane stove. I am so glad we did.

It rained. I mean the first night it poured (fortunately after we got the tent and pavilion set up) and the Coleman really saved our trip. Because we had a means to cook, we weren't driven off like so many others. We just popped on our rain gear, huddled under the pavilion and popped open the Coleman and started cooking. First hot coffee and cocoa, because it was getting cold, and then dinner.

Now the best thing we did, besides buying this stove, was bringing our Lodge cast iron griddle/grill. Lodge Logic Pro 20-by-10-7/16-Inch Cast-Iron Grill/Griddle. This griddle fit the stove perfectly and gave us a huge surface to cook on. (Plus, once the griddle heated up, we all huddled around it warming our hands.)

Seriously, the combination is great. And the combo saved our weekend. The next day was beautiful. We cooked breakfast in no time and were off on a walk.

Talking Points:::
We thought the stove was great. I think it heated up the water for coffee and hot Tang faster than our electric stove at home.

Easy to use. I will note that one of the labels for the knobs was on incorrectly-- but no big deal.

Even if you love other means of cooking while camping, I'd suggest taking the stove along as a back up. Being cold and without food is no fun.

Pam T~

Great stove
This is the best brand for any camping equipment and this stove is great! One touch of a button and your burner is lit. No more windy days keeping you from lighting your burner! I give it an AAA+++. On top of everything else, the price was great. I had been pricing these for awhile and Amazon was $20 cheaper than anyone else with free shipping on top. Great deal!! My husband had picked out an off brand at a local sporting goods store that was only $9 less than this one. The choice was simple. Buy this one, it's worth it!

Wouldn't leave home without it!
I just returned from a 5 day camping trip in Yosemite with a group of fifteen family members. We used this stove everyday and it was very easy to use and we even took it with us while fishing one day and made grilled cheese sandwiches. I would definitely recommend buying one.

Normally we take a small portable charcoal grill with us while camping, but picked this grill up at a great price and thought we would give it a try. If you are a fan of charcoal grilling then this is not for you, but for convenience and ease of use this grill is really great.

Lets first take a look at what comes in the box and the assembly of the grill:

Inside the box you will find the grill unit, instruction booklet , a porcelain coated steel grill grate, drip tray, feet w/screws and the propane attachment tube w/regulator. Everything was packed well and in perfect condition. After reading the booklet we removed all the packing material and assembled the unit. Assembly is simple and really only involves turning the unit over and attaching the four small feet with the included screws. A small phillips screwdriver was all that was required.

Setup for use:

The grill stores folded up just as a propane stove, but is slightly larger. To get set up and grilling you take the following steps:

Place the grill on a flat and stable surface

Unlock the lid, raise it up and secure the 2 wind guards in place

Remove the propane tube(it stores inside the grill when not in use) and attach a 1 pound propane cylinder

For easy cleanup line the grill under the burner with foil, making sure to punch a hole in the foil for the drip hole

Turn the knob on the regulator and use a long match or stick light to light the grill and you are ready to start grilling

Grilling

We found the grill to actually work quite well for a small group. The first time we cooked bratwurst on the grill without much trouble. As with any grill you will need to learn the hot and cool spots on the grill surface so you can move the food around as you are cooking. We had 10 bratwurst on the grill and still had plenty of room for more. The angled pan under the grill and the grease drip pan kept flareups to a minimum, but we did have a few and would recommend having a spray bottle on hand for the large flareup. The grill surface feels very solid and should last for years with proper care. The second use of the grill we cooked pork steaks, again with no trouble. The grill is large enough to handle 4 to 5 good sized pork steaks. Overall cooking on the grill is fast and easy.

Cleanup

Cleaning the Coleman PerfectFlow Camp Grill is very easy if you make sure to line the pan with foil before grilling. Wait for the grill to cool and remove the grate and wipe clean, remove the foil and wipe the pan, wind guards and lid. Carefully slide out the drip tray from the underside of the grill and clean it out. Dry all the surfaces and fold everything in for storage.

Pros:

Very portable and lightweight

Easy to use and clean

No need to carry bags of charcoal or lighter fluid

Cons:

Not large enough to cook for large group

If you are a fan charcoal then this is not for you

Here are the features from Coleman:

Coleman also offers 2 other versions of this portable camping grill. The Coleman PerfectFlow Grill Stove has a smaller grilling area, but adds a side burner making this an all in one cooking system. If you have just 3 or 4 people you can use this combo unit to cook an entire meal. The Coleman PerfectFlow Insta Start Grill Stove adds the matchless Insta Start lighting system, it is a push button ignitor alleviating the need for matches or lighters.

Description

It's a stove and grill in one convenient, portable package. Featuring Coleman's InstaStart technology, this stove lights at the push of a button, so you can leave the matches at home. Constructed of durable enamel-painted steel, the stove sports a heavy-duty, removable die-cast aluminum grill grate andchrome cooking grate, and non-stick cast-aluminum grill grate all designed to be easy to clean, featuring a grease-management system with a removable dishwasher-safe tray. The 2-Burner Propane Grill Stove's two burners are fully adjustable, offering up to 10,000 BTUs per burner, with large control knobs positioned in front for easy access. One 16.4-ounce propane cylinder (sold separately) gives you over an hour of burn time on the highest setting. The folding WindBlock system comes in handy in breezy weather, or you can fold down the shield to make convenient side shelves. Coleman's PerfectFlow pressure-control system ensures consistent cooking performance, even in cold weather, at high altitudes, and when fuel is low. Color: Red/black.

Long the authority on propane camping stoves, Coleman steps up to the plate again with its PerfectFlow InstaStart grill stove. Coleman's PerfectFlow appliances regulate the pressure of the propane to provide a consistent cooking performance without flaring or flickering. This steady fuel stream holds true even in cold weather, high altitudes, or when the fuel is low. The stove is equipped with two 10,000 BTU burners, one with a nickel-chrome stove grate and one with a removable die-cast aluminum grill grate. This Coleman propane grill stove lets you grill burgers and heat water at the same time. As a result, you can grill burgers and heat chili at the same time. The fuel is long lasting as well: with just a single 16.4-ounce propane fuel cylinder (sold separately), you can use both burners on high for 1.1 hours--more than enough time to prepare a weekend's worth of meals. And lighting the stove couldn't be easier thanks to Coleman's matchless InstaStart technology, which sparks the burners with the touch of a button. Constructed of durable enamel-painted steel, the PerfectFlow grill stove also includes Coleman's Windblock side panels, which not only shield the burners for maximum heat, but also double as side trays when folded down. Other features include 160 inches of cooking space, a grease management system with a removable, dishwasher-safe tray, and a limited five-year warranty. About Coleman More than 100 years ago, a young man with an entrepreneurial spirit and a better idea began manufacturing lanterns in Wichita, Kansas. His name was W.C. Coleman, and the company he founded would change life in America. A man plagued with such poor vision he sometimes had to ask classmates to read aloud to him, Coleman saw a brilliant light in 1900 in a drugstore window that stopped him in his tracks. He inquired about the light inside and discovered he was able to read even the small print on a medicine bottle by the illumination. The lamps had mantles, not wicks, and were fueled by gasoline under pressure instead of coal oil. Soon afterward, Coleman started a lighting service that offered a "no light, no pay" clause--a big step forward for merchants who were burned by inferior products that rarely worked--and drew substantial interest from businesses that wanted to keep their lights on after dark. In the ensuing years, Coleman expanded its product line well beyond lanterns. The company's current catalog is thick with products that make spending time outdoors a pleasure. There are coolers that keep food and drinks cold for days on end, comfortable airbeds that won't deflate during the night, a complete line of LED lights that last for years, powerful portable grills that cook with an authentic open-grill flame, and much, much more. Coleman has truly fashioned much of our outdoor camping experience, and expects to do so for generations to come.

Excellent stove/grill...

I bought this stove/grill on sale at a Target store to replace my old liquid fuel stove in time for camping season this past summer. It came with the instastart ignition although it doesn't say so in the Amazon product description. The product picture shows the little red igniter button near the center of the stove front. The grill is an excellent design option allowing for grilling steaks, hot dogs, burgers, sausages, etc., which I do frequently now. The Instastart ignition has worked flawlessly so far.

Propane bottles win hands-down over liquid fuel tanks (no more having to pump the darn thing all the time). The bottles are cheap and with normal use, last through a three-meal day, no problem! I usually get a meal or two the next day, since lunches are typically cold... sandwiches, salads, etc. Most of the time we are away from the camp site at lunch time anyway. I always bring a 'bottle-a-day plus one' to be on the safe side and usually bring a bottle or two home for the next trip (depending on the length of the outting and how much cooking). I can usually find the bottles on sale through the year for just over a buck in the 'big' department stores and load up on them. As far as I can tell, the claim of an even, continuous gas flow is true (high or low)... just like using a gas range at home. Clean up is easy and the grease trap underneath the unit catches all that fat dripping from those New York strip steaks. Two or three strip steaks will fill that grease trap reservoir to the brim, so don't forget to empty it before grilling again. The long grill burner also heats that 10 or 12 inch fry pan across the bottom quickly for bacon, eggs, etc. The grill itself will take some scrubbing when you get home if you have been grilling steaks.

If you're looking to replace that old liquid fuel stove, do yourself a favor and get this unit, you won't be sorry.

I was a little hesitant to buy this grill, but I was proven wrong. This is grill is great. I made hamburgers and was dreading the clean-up and boy was I suprised at how easy it was to clean. I just wiped the bottom out with paper towel and that was it. The grill cooks evenly and quickly. I am so excited to go camping next year.

My husband and I bought this stove at Target last year and we love it! We use it all time whether we are camping, or just at home. I love the large grilling area. The other day I was able to grill 8 kabobs all at once. It is easy to clean and easy to start up. My only complaint would be that it takes practice to adjust the intensity of the heat, but once you master that, there is no problem. I would recommend this product to anyone!

We bought ours in June 2007 and took it on a 103-day cross country motorcycle trip towing a pop-up tent trailer. We bought it because it was compact and fit nicely into the camper's storage area and because it was a barbecue and stove in one unit, so we were able to make a large variety of meals. We cooked on it every day and it never let us down. The parts stow neatly inside the grill when closed. We put aluminum foil on the bottom to keep it clean. You don't need the sides when it is set on a picnic or portable camping table. We always used both sides to support the lid and as a windbreak. We used the stove many times after returning from our big trip. We now have a travel trailer and use the Coleman as our outdoor barbecue. Still cooking up great steaks!

This coleman Grill & Stove combo worked great for 3 days staight! The food came out great, the only negative is the cleaning but that goes with any BBQ set. All my friends was impress with all the food I cooked on this thing. I recommend it, for the outdoors.

get the best of both worlds with a grill and burner in a small unit
the only issue is you cannot have the left windshield up when using the burner but that not a major issue most of the time which is why i still gave it five stars

Coleman 2-Burner Propane Grill StoveThis stove worked as described.Used at altitude it burned as it should.I never used the high setting. The grill is perfect for a dinner for two and the optional griddle cooked eggs and bacon for 4.We take this stove in our RV to cook outside,it is small and compact and takes little storage space.I highly reccomend this product even though it is a bit pricy.

This grill stove is absolutely perfect for us. It's easy to use, easy to carry, and best of all easy to clean. You can even put a layer of foil down in the bottom of the grill part for super easy clean up. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes to go camping and is tired of trying to cook over a campfire. Don't skimp by buying something cheaper. You get what you pay for and more with this excellent grill stove.

by kathi from Texas, USA on 2010-07-11
We purchased this for our family camping trip. I brought only a small frying pan and small saucepan with us. My husband cooked all the meals and loved it. We used it for 4 breakfast meals, 4 suppers, and heated water for dishes about 4 times, and used only about 1 1/4 canisters. Everything cooked evenly, completely, and quickly (we tried pork chops, fajitas, hamburgers, bacon, eggs, sausage, and pancakes). We bought the Coleman Griddle to go with it, and it worked perfectly as well, although we opted to make the pancakes in the small frying pan. I didn't get the automatic ignite version, and I don't regret it at all. That would just be another part that may (or may not) break. This stove is simple, convenient, and works perfectly as it is. My husband is so proud of it that we're getting the carrying case to go with it.

We recently bought this set and it worked out very well! The silverware set got good use, is very convenient and takes up little space. The dinnerware is durable and easy to clean. I've always loved enamel products and this is a wonderful addition to our camp kitchen! We have it cleaned up and ready to use again! Posted a couple photos.

First I have to agree with another reviewer on here that the dishes do heat up quickly when hot food is placed on them - so eating in your lap isn't really ideal. But then I imagine that it's the same with all enamelware sets, so I don't consider this a reason for not liking them. I also have to agree with another reviewer that the spoons are a bit large - ok, freakishly large. I pulled them out and compared them to my big tablespoons at home - they are at least as wide and about 1/4" longer. My husband doesn't mind them, but I do have to pack a regular spoon for my 3 year old (which fits easily in the case along with the big ones.) That being said they double nicely as small serving spoons - so alas, one less thing I have to pack. Always a plus! The knives are a bit sharper than I expected (which is awesome - I don't have to pack extra steak knives) and I love the carry case for the silverware! There's no rattling around scratching things up in your gear. The dishes are a just a tad bit on the small side, but big enough and nonetheless a great size for camping; they are small and light to pack, easy to clean, and very well made. The box my set came in was also a little "crushed", so I check each piece carefully and didn't find any scratches or defects - so no big deal. I agree that it would be nice to have a carry case for the dishes as well, but we are building a grub box for camping that will have a compartment just for them so that will be a non issue soon enough. And last but not least - I love the color!! This set is super cute (I'm such a girl - haha). I just love the "cowboy western" appeal these red speckled pieces have on my table. All in all I definitely recommend this set!

I purchased this, but for half the price from Walmart. It's a great value.....especially when you look at the silverware. On many sites, this item alone is $10. We've used them a lot while camping. We exchanged the first set I purchased because the enamel was defective on one of the mugs when we opened the box. We went through the entire second set before exchanging the first to make sure there were no issues.

Nice!!

by J. Keller from on 2008-01-06
I bought this recently for a camping trip in the desert where there are no facilities. Honestly, I'd never even heard of a "shower tent" before until I was searching around amazon.com looking for anything that could help make the trip more enjoyable since I would be tent camping for 5 days. I'm really glad I bought this and it was so nice to be able to take a "real" shower while hanging out in the boonies.

I did the trial set-up at home (highly recommend) and when I got to the camp site, I had this thing up in 15 minutes. I did have to use the guy lines to help stabilize it but I think that was because the ground wasn't completely level. I didn't use the rain cover at first, but in the end, decided to put it on because it seemed to add stability to the unit. Also, I didn't think I'd need to use the floor because I was on sandy desert ground...but I should have put that on because I was soon squishing in silty-slippery sandy desert mud in no time. Live and learn.

The included 5-gallon solar shower is great, but I found that filling it all the way up was a little much for the time of year and amount of sun available...my first shower was cold! But subsequent days, with less water in the bag, the temp was just fine. However, keep in mind that these types of shower bags are still gravity-fed, so you'll be bending over to get your head wet, body rinsed, etc. I think for the next trip I'll add a hot-water-on-demand-shower-pump to my car-camping gear.

Overall, great product, well made, sturdy and easy to assemble on my own sans help from hubbie. Keep in mind, though, this is a heavy piece of equipment and likely not something you want to hike-in with for any great distance. Great for car-camping, though.

TexSport Camping Shower Shelter
After trying a couple of other brand/models it is a real pleasure to use the TexSport. Goes up easily &amp; is very sturdy when pegged down correctly. Well designed &amp; the 'extras' such as poly floor, towel bars, shower caddy, etc., are great. I like this unit best of all similar items available.

This shower shelter is a great size, plenty of room to stand up and move around, and I was able to put it together easily by myself. It is a sturdy shelter, but the mesh pockets that you hang inside to keep toiletries in seems a little flimsy.

This shower has lots of room and is very sturdy! I brought it with me to Burning Man and it never failed. I'm really happy with my purchase, and it was less expensive than others I looked at. Great buy!

The shower tent set up quickly and was pretty sturdy. It's pretty big inside too. It leaned somewhat when the wind picked-up so I used the stakes and guy wires to stabilize it. We used it for showers and as an outhouse with a Pett toilet.

This is a great buy! I purchased two for my Youth Group to go to Creation Festival, one for boys to shower and change in and one for girls. I am so pleased with them. They are larger than I expected and have plenty of room to shower and change without being cramped. They are durable and easy to pop-up and take down. They take up little room to store and travel. I'm glad I purchased two right away. Hope this helps.

I think this pop up is going to do the trick for us. My wife is handicap and cannot make it to the out house at the family camp in Maine. She found a unique camp toilet but needed some privacy, she found this shower pop up and now we have it. A private space, plus a shower if ever needed. The family already has a shower but the more we stay up there when I retire the easier for my wife and I to enjoy the lake and it's surroundings. This product will be a blessing. We love this product and have used it a lot...but in an unintended way. We have several dancers in our family and endure long days and weekends of competitions and performances. I bought this pop-up to take with us to allow privacy for costume changes, cat naps and quiet spots for doing homework. It is big enough to accommodate all of that and yet lightweight and small enough to carry it with us. It sets up and comes down easily. It folds up to the size of an extra-large pizza but weighs next to nothing.

The Guide Gear Pop-up Shelter has been the most wonderful outdoor item that I have ever purchased. It actually pops up and is ready to use. It is easy to fold despite the negative reviews about the instructions (I almost did not order the the pop-up shelter because i did not think that I would be able to fold it up). There are only five simple steps and it is folded and ready to put in the trunk. It is a must have for Parents, you can take it to the park, the kids can change clothes in it. It has alot of room, there is room for a portable toilet, a chair, and a small table. In addition, it is a little over 6 feet tall. This is a wonderful item.... it is third on my list right after a car, washer-dryer set, and the Guide Gear Pop-up Shelter.

Our family has always been more on the "minimal" side for car camping trips, but with my 23 year old daughter and her friends along on our recent trip, we needed a shower. We bought a Zodi water heater and this pop up shower tent. Great decision! The tent pops up in a second, nothing to put together and added almost no weight or bulk to our gear. The olive green material provided total coverage, blended nicely with the outdoor terrain, and had plenty of room for big guys. The 3 adjustments we made were adding a clip/clothespin to attach the shower head to the top, a chair right outside to hang towel and clothes (it cannot support much weight), and a large plastic pan to stand on. With those items, we had eight of us showering daily with no hitch.

Columbia High Trail 6-10 person Tent

Bring the family to the campsite and still have room to spare with the Columbia High Trail dome tent. The High Trail--which sleeps up to eight people--is spacious and versatile, with a room divider that turns the tent from one large room to two smaller rooms. As a result, you'll enjoy plenty of elbowroom while you sleep. The tent also includes four large no-see-um mesh windows, roof vents, and side vents, so you'll enjoy optimum ventilation even during rainstorms. And thanks to the factory-sealed fly and floor seams and the polyester bathtub floor--which wraps up the sides and is protected by a rain shingle--the High Trail keeps the wet weather at bay. The tent also stores plenty of gear in addition to its eight campers, with two mesh interior pockets, a gear loft for organization, and two hanging cupholders. Finally, the tent sets up easily thanks to its freestanding design and combo clip-and-sleeve assembly. Other features include two large D doors for easy entry and exit, a woven reflective zipper pull, a flashlight loop, a small Camp Port for stretching electrical cords into the tent, and two mud mats sheltered by an overhanging semi-vestibule. The High Trail tent comes with poles, stakes, and an oxford nylon carrying bag with expandable gussets. Columbia's extensive product line includes a wide variety of outerwear, sportswear, rugged footwear and accessories. Columbia specializes in developing innovative products that are functional yet stylish and offer great value. Eighty-year-old matriarch Gert Boyle, chairman of the board, and her son, Tim Boyle, president and CEO, lead the company. Columbia's history starts with Gert's parents, Paul and Marie Lamfrom, when they fled Germany in 1937. They bought a small hat distributorship in Portland, Oregon, and named it Columbia Hat Company, after the river bordering the city. Soon frustrated by poor deliveries from suppliers, the Lamfroms decided to start manufacturing products themselves. In 1948, Gert married college sweetheart Neal Boyle, who joined the family business and later took the helm of the growing company. When Neal suddenly died of a heart attack in 1970, Gert enlisted help from Tim, then a college senior. After that it wasn't long before business really started to take off. Columbia was one of the first companies to make jackets from waterproof/breathable fabric. The company introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then-60-year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign. The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry. Today, Columbia Sportswear employs more than 1,800 people around the world and distributes and sells products in more than 50 countries and to more than 12,000 retailers internationally. Amazon.com Tent Guide Selecting a Tent Fortunately, there are all kinds of tents for weekend car campers, Everest expeditions, and everything in-between. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Expect the Worst In general, it's wise to choose a tent that's designed to withstand the worst possible conditions you think you'll face. For instance, if you're a summer car camper in a region where weather is predictable, an inexpensive family or all purpose tent will likely do the trick--especially if a vehicle is nearby and you can make a mad dash for safety when bad weather swoops in! If you're a backpacker, alpine climber or bike explorer, or if you like to car camp in all seasons, you'll want to take something designed to handle more adversity. Three- and Four-Season Tents For summer, early fall and late spring outings, choose a three-season tent. At minimum, a quality three-season tent will have lightweight aluminum poles, a reinforced floor, durable stitching, and a quality rain-fly. Some three-season tents offer more open-air netting and are more specifically designed for summer backpacking and other activities. Many premium tents will feature pre-sealed, taped seams and a silicone-impregnated rain-fly for enhanced waterproofness. For winter camping or alpine travel, go with a four-season model. Because they typically feature more durable fabric coatings, as well as more poles, four-season tents are designed to handle heavy snowfall and high winds without collapsing. Of course, four-season tents exact a weight penalty of about 10 to 20 percent in trade for their strength and durability. They also tend to be more expensive. Domes and Tunnels Tents are broadly categorized into two types, freestanding, which can stand up on their own, and those that must be staked down in order to stand upright. Freestanding tents often incorporate a dome-shaped design, and most four-season tents are constructed this way because a dome leaves no flat spots on the outer surface where snow can collect. Domes are also inherently stronger than any other design. Meanwhile, many three-season models employ a modified dome configuration called a tunnel. These are still freestanding, but they require fewer poles than a dome, use less fabric, and typically have a rectangular floor plan that offers less storage space than a dome configuration. Many one and two-person tents are not freestanding, but they make up for it by being more lightweight. Because they use fewer poles, they can also be quicker to set up than a dome. Size Matters Ask yourself how many people you'd like to fit in your fabric hotel now and in the future. For soloists and minimalists, check out one-person tents. If you're a mega-minimalist, or if you have your eye on doing some big wall climbs, a waterproof-breathable bivy sack is the ticket. Some bivy sacks feature poles and stake points to give you a little more breathing room. Also, if you don't need bug protection and you want to save weight, check out open-air shelters. Families who plan on car camping in good weather can choose from a wide range of jumbo-sized tents that will accommodate all your little ones with room to spare. A wide range of capacities is also available for three- and four-season backpacking and expedition tents. Remember, though, the bigger the tent you buy, the heavier it will be, although it's easy to break up the tent components among several people in your group. It's also helpful to compare the volume and floor-space measurements of models you're considering.

Great tent!
Received this tent yesterday, and was able to put it up in the backyard in about 20-25 minutes with the help of my 9 and 7 year old daughters. Now that I know which poles go where, I am thinking it shouldn't take more then 10-15 minutes to put up the next time.

This tent is very roomy!! In my opinion 8 people in this tent would be tight, but definitely 6 people with room to spare.

One of the previous posts regarding the longest pole was very helpful. You would think it goes on the tent, but it is in fact for the rainfly!

Very happy with my purchase!!!

This is an awesome tent. A very good value for the money. The tent was very easy to set up but it does take two people. Very large and roomy inside, can easily fit two queen mattresses with a little room to spare. We were extremly happy with this purchase

I got this tent because it said it would sleep 6-8. Well I am part of a family of 4. After blowing up 4 twin air matteres there was not much room left. For us it slep 4. There was no room for another. The doors drove me crazy. I couldn't stand the zippers. The air does not circulate well. There are 2 side windows and the door windows that don't open all the way down. If I had to do it all over I would of purchased another tent.

Great family tent
I bought this tent for a family trip to Yellowstone. It's a great tent. Large enough for two queen sized air mattresses and plenty of room for all the additional gear for a week of family fun. My seven year old twins and I put it up in about 10 minutes.

It rained our first night and we stayed completely dry, the factory sealant kept all water out. The next afternoon the wind was extremely strong. As we drove through the campground there were no less than 20 tents that had been flattened by the wind. We were happy to see our tent had no problem. This is the biggest reason why I chose this tent. Although this is a VERY tall tent, (At 6 foot I can easily stand and walk around) the design seems to be sleek enough to withstand wind without too much vibration or noise. We camp by both mountains and ocean, on a regular basis, so that is important.

One thing to keep in mind when putting this tent up, which was mentioned in another review, the longest pole is for the rain-fly. It goes into the rain fly in a very small "sleeve" which is not marked very well near the side of the rain-fly. The instructions are a bit vague. Even so It goes up very easy.

Buy this tent if you are looking for a sturdy, roomy tent.

by Todd H Huisken from Irvine, CA, US on 2010-07-20
My family and I took this tent camping in Sequoia National Park last week. On the second night we had a substantial thunder / lightning down-pour for two hours with high winds. I laid there in my sleeping bag looking up at the ceiling and walls looking for leaks but found none. I fell back to sleep confident that we would remain dry. The next morning I checked the tent again and found everything inside dry. It was solid! So in terms of weatherproof, this tent gets an "A" from me.

Regarding the size, I felt the tent was plenty big for the four of us with ample headroom. I had read one of the previous reviews about the poles which made set up much easier. Once you have set it up once, it goes up in less than 5 minutes. I've set it up by myself in less than 10 minutes. My only concerns was that the front door zipper gets caught on the weather flap requiring two hands to un zip it from time to time. I give it an "A-"

I bought this tent after looking at reviews of at least 100 other tents. I am very happy with it and would buy it again.

Good Tent

by Shou C Chen from Los Angeles, CA United States on 2010-08-13
This tent is very easy to set up. Both my wife and I were first time campers and we did not have problems getting it up. We only had a minor issue with tying down the center of the rainfly to the top ridge poles after the tent has been erected. Probably we will try to secure the two ties at the middle of the rainfly first before erecting the tent next time. There are tons of room in this tent which make it extra comfy. The bottom of the tent is thin so you do need a good tarp underneath to protect it. We got a heavy duty waterproof (15' x 10') tarp online at Tarpaflex. It is slightly smaller then 15'x10' by 1/2 an inch which fit this tent perfectly. The ventilation is excellent. We have yet to experience heavy rain and we hope that it will hold up well.

Columbia tent not quite Columbia quality

by UDBowl from on 2010-07-29
I ordered this tent, knowing Columbia as a good brand name. Though it was close to what I expected, I wasn't quite satisfied with it. The major difference between this and most other tents is that the floor of the tent is not made of a stronger material - it's the same material as the sides. If you look at Coleman tents, there is a reinforced base that is thicker and much more durable.
Also, the door was a bit of a pain. You have to mess with 3 zippers to get in and out - I much prefer a "D" shaped door for ease of entry and exit.
There is only one "window" in the rear of the tent which you can open/close from the inside. The other windows form the screened-in portion in the front and must be opened/closed from the outside - not very convenient! Same with the door...the exterior has to be closed from the outside before zippering the mesh.
Lastly, the tarp that fits over the tent didn't stay very securely in place.
Overall, the tent looks awesome and has a great large floor space. It's easy to set up. It's just not quite what I was looking for...and I didn't keep it.

DO NOT BUY
Bad tent, leaked first time it was in the rain. Front fly does not open in the middle making it very hard to open and close from the inside. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Poles are much to be desired

I bought this tent for a family camping trip. I really like the concept of the tent and the price was right.
There is not much more I can add to the review detailing the whole tent from setup to verdict by JPaint21. I absolutely agree with the review.

I just want to add an issue I have with the tent.
- The Poles

During my weekend trip we did not experience rain/winds of any kind. When we took the tent down the poles were bent at each connection point. I'm sure if this tent experiences any wind at all there is a high risk of damage.

Great concept with a few flaws

by JPaint21 from Alabama USA on 2010-04-27
We purchased this tent in March and have camped out in it twice now, once in the backyard just for fun and once for a week at a time. We really enjoy this tent and it is exactly what we were looking for. Here are my findings:

Setup: Very simple. It's basically a double "dome" design, with two sets of two long poles that cross over and form two connected domes. The stakes are metal rather than plastic, although they do bend somewhat easily in hard ground. The rainfly has one long pole that goes down the center and is easy to get up and over the tent. It could be tough to set up by just one person, but if you need a tent this big, you've probably got more than one person there to do it. There are plenty of ties, clips, and velcro to hold the poles to the tent and the rainfly down on top.

Space: This is a VERY roomy tent. There is more than enough room for most people to stand up in it, and you could easily fit two queen size air mattresses in it and still have plenty of room for lots of other gear. There is a divider that you can hang in the middle and essentially make the back area a sleeping room and the front a covered sitting area if you want, or divide it into two separate sleeping areas.

Construction: The tent is well constructed, but does not have the usual "bathtub" fabric on the bottom. A ground cover/tarp is a must, since the floor is made of the same material as the sides. The rain-fly openings are somewhat of a hassle, since they can only be closed from the outside. The inside zipper also does not match up with the rain fly zipper, so it's a little more work to get in and out of the tent when the rain fly is closed than most tents are. The big openings on the rain fly have very good tiebacks though, so when you have them open they stay out of the way.

Weather: This tent vents VERY WELL in the heat. The entire thing is basically mesh underneath the rain fly, and there are big openings in the front and a smaller window in the back so the air flows through it well when it's all opened up. As for the rain, we sealed the seams on our tent before we went camping with it, and we did not get wet. There were a couple of seams that leaked a little that we're going to reseal, but they were small and in unimportant places. We did encounter some very strong winds on our trip, and we are working with the warranty department to get some replacement parts. The poles bent a little bit and the "pocket" where the pole in the rain fly hooks in ripped. These winds, however, were a part of a severe weather system and lesser winds have not caused any damage to the tent.

Verdict: This is a great family tent and provides lots of space and more than adequate shelter. There are a few design flaws, but they are nothing more than a small annoyance. If it is very windy, however, your best bet is to take the tent down.

They introduced the breakthrough technology called the Columbia Interchange System, in which a shell and liner combine for multiple wearing options. In the early 1980s, then 60 year-old Gert began her role as "Mother Boyle" in Columbia's successful and popular advertising campaign. The company went public in 1998 and moved into a new era as a world leader in the active outdoor apparel industry.
There are better tents, there are worse tents.

by E from on 2010-02-20
There have already been lengthy reviews, so I'll make this as short as possible.

Pros:
* You will stay dry, regardless of how rainy it gets. There will be no dampness inside.
* Windows/Door seal TIGHT.
* It is roomy for a 1 room tent. You will be able to fit a double top queen air mattress with enough room for gear as well.
* Storage nets for cellphones, wallets, glasses, etc... at an arms length away.
* LOTS of ventilation. You will stay cool in 80 degree weather. Yet at the same time, we stayed warm in 30 degree nights.
* The door/windows will not catch while opening/shutting. You'll appreciate this when you are coming back from peeing a 3am and its 30 degrees :)

Cons:
* As an experienced camper, this tent was a nightmare to set up. It kept collapsing in the process. May be easier if you are tall and have 2-3 people to help set up.
* The poles are not Columbia quality. So far none have broke, but they are bent to shreds.
* I just do not think that this tend would hold up in wind. The poles cannot handle it. Although, the rainfly stays secure in mild wind.
* If you have the tent up for a couple of days in a row, it will slowly lean. This is probably due to the poles.

This tent isn't necessarily a bad tent, it's average. If you're a light camper who is tenting in mild conditions, I'm sure it will do just fine. However, if you plan on surviving the elements, this tent simply won't hold up.

An awesome little tent!

by Shannon N. Folk from on 2008-07-22
I bought this tent from a sporting goods store to take on an overnight camping trip. It was a last minute purchase because the tent I already had that I thought would be ok wasn't. I didn't even take this out of the box prior to setting it up it was so last minute. All in all, I have no complaints whatsoever with this tent. The poles are color coded-blue pole through the blue loops, green pole through the green loops, black pole for the rainfly. It went up in about 10 minutes with two people setting everything up. The inside was nice and roomy-four adults, a medium sized cooler and some backpacks fit comfortably. I am 5'4" tall and could almost stand up straight inside. The windows (3) were nice and big as was the door. There is a hook in the top of the tent for hanging a flashlight or battery lantern. There are side pockets attached for putting things like watches, glasses, or wallets, as well as cup holders and such that can be attached if desired. I didn't bother as we were attending a weekend-long wine festival-I figured we wouldn't care too much about cupholders :-) There was an attached welcome-mat type thing that you could leave your shoes on so no dirt would get inside the tent.

During our stay it poured not once, but 3 times, and not a drop came inside as we had attached the rainfly just in case. Like I said before, I hadn't taken it out to set it up or anything, so there was no additional seam seal or waterproofing on the tent and we stayed perfectly dry. I read reviews of other Columbia tents and saw complaints that their poles snapped, but we had no problem and it was fairly windy when it rained. I didn't care for the metal stakes that came with the tent. I had purchased additional stakes after hearing complaints about those as well but didn't need to use them. The ground was pretty rocky underneath the grass, so the stakes were difficult to put in without a mallet, but they remained in the ground, and the package came with more than enough to hold down the tent. Get a mallet and you'll have no issues.

I only spent about $100 on this tent, and it was worth every penny. I have other Columbia products (winter coat) and have had no problems dealing with their warranty department. They seem to stand behind their products, and if there was ever an issue with this tent I wouldn't expect to have any troubles with them. An awesome little tent, I say!

benefits and drawbacks

by The Delite Rancher from Phoenix, Arizona on 2008-04-29
I purchased Columbia's North Rim on a hunch. At the time, there was not a single review of the tent anywhere on the Internet. Being newly released, this is the first review to report on the merits and issues with this tent.

The Good . . .
The North Rim is outstanding in many respects. It is a roomy four person tent. The use of space is efficient in terms of design elements such as shape and profile. There are few dome tents of this large a size; most tents in the four person and up range often choose comfort (straight walls) over designs that would better enable a tent to withstand harsh weather (dome). The North Rim has all sorts of nifty features like drink holders, pockets, fabric shelves and a port that can be used to channel an electrical cable. The zippers are supposed to be self-correcting. Relative to the set-up size, the packaged tent is surprisingly light and compact. Taking around ten to fifteen minutes, it is also easy to set-up and take down. That written, two people will make the job significantly easier. The poles are color coordinated to make assembly easy. Recent Columbia tents have received a good deal of criticism for coming with cheap bendy stakes. The North Rim comes with sturdy stakes that actually work. The tent is also attractive in terms of design and color. In all of the official pictures, the tent's green looks like an ugly lime. In real life, it's darker and more pleasing to the eye.

. . . the Bad and the Ugly
Okay, so after writing about the merits of the North Rim, why the three star rating? In a word: poles. I went into this assuming that the technology behind fiberglass poles had recently made great advancements, thus making fiberglass a viable design choice for a tent of this size. In the first night that I used the tent, two poles shattered. (Check out the customer images for photos.) While I didn't have an anemometer to measure the exact wind speed, it just wasn't that windy. It was a typical night in the Sonoran Desert. In fact, out of our camp, the $20.00 five and dime store tent had no problems. So while the North Rim appears to thoughtfully balance inside comfort with an overall sturdy design, it is not enough. Keep your receipt handy; it will be essential in getting replacements under warranty. Columbia was very cooperative in sending out replacements.

In addition to the initial camping trip in my home state, I've now used the tent quite a few times in Colorado, Nevada, Utah and California. On the nights when the weather was cooperative, the tent did well. After a couple of additionally windy nights, the tent has shown significant distress. A clip on the fly broke. (see picture) From chafing due to wind, the pole sleeves have worn through. (see picture) I wanted a high quality, larger sized tent and I was willing to pay for it. I figured that by getting a tent with Columbia quality, I would be safe. The North Rim is a beautiful tent with many special features. In the end, the tent seems to be made to keep an easterner dry and not help a westerner outlast the wind. This is a fantastic tent . . . provided that it doesn't get windy where you camp!
